GEAR TESTS: Canon EOS-R Underwater Camera Review

Pretty much every major camera manufacturer now has a foot in the full-frame mirrorless game. As a frequent Canon shooter, I jumped at the opportunity to try their latest offering, the EOS R.

Right out of the box, the camera feels and operates differently than the company's DSLRs. New features include the new RF lens mount, a touch-sensitive multi-function bar, and an additional control ring on the EF lens mount adapter. The camera forces users to customize its functions to maximize the performance.

The camera, mount adapter and lens are about the same size as the Canon 5D Mark IV. And, overall, the image quality from the two cameras is about the same. There are some differences, though. I enjoyed the focus peaking features of the EOS R, which makes hitting macro focus a little easier. The EOS R adds a control wheel on the lens adapter that can be customized to many different camera settings. This is a crucial addition because it makes adjusting ISO as easy as adjusting shutter speed or aperture.
